Stalin's Russia --- 1952
“TO EACH HIS NEEDS”
“To Each His Needs” is the first story in an anthology collection that looks at how people in different societies and different time periods answer the same question: “What would you do if you suddenly found yourself with the power to change your life and the lives of those around you?”
In Moscow, Russia during the winter of 1952 we see how Yosef and Svetlana Roskeim answer that question. Yosef is a young lieutenant in the Moscow Police Anti-Profiteering Squad, Svetlana is a talented Industrial Designer. This kindhearted young couple find themselves suddenly with the power to feed a hungry population despite the numerous shortages and harsh rationing that is the norm for citizens of Stalin's Worker's Paradise.
But power in the hands of an individual is forbidden inside dictatorships especially Joseph Stalin's murderous reign. Do they use their newfound ability and risk being sent to a prison camp to die? What will be the consequense when Yosef and Svetlana share an endless supply of fresh meat, diary, vegatable, and fruits in a country where a full stomach is cause for suspicion?
Prisons and paradises can
take many forms. But they
all have their beginnings in
the hearts and minds of men
and women who would do good.
Some are formed by
collective will. Some are
built one good intention at
a time.
